Welcoming & supporting undergrads in FOHS

It’s been on everyone’s radar for some time.  Students need transitional support when they come to university.  While the university has plenty of resources, it can often be a quagmire to navigate finding them.

One thing that came out of the visits to Department meetings is that to aid retention, we really need to do more to guide students during the start of university.

At a Rapid Improvement Event around student enrolment this year, it was identified that while some faculties had built their own transition type units for students, the students were unsure if they were the same thing, did they need to look at both, some of the content was the same but delivered in different ways, so a decision was made to build a uni-wide unit which would address transition issues, and support opportunities and resources common across the faculties into ONE iLearn unit.  This project is currently under development in preparation for S1, 2017.

In the Learning and Teaching Plan green paper, there is reference to making our own transition unit for FOHS undergrad students.  A call was put out to the Directors of Learning and Teaching in each Department and PACE to contribute.  The result is Survival Guide to Faculty of Human Sciences (FOHS_SGHS unit code or pronounced foss higgs for short).  With the recent opening of iLearn, all staff will have view access to the unit.  If you would like a higher level access to the unit or would like to be enrolled, just email me.

So what’s the point of difference you ask?  Our unit is tailored with information specific to our Faculty and Departments, as well as promoting a friendly, supportive culture to our students.  Emphasis is placed on providing in one place, information that students frequently ask.  If you have any suggestions, please let me know.  This unit will be an iterative process and suggestions are warmly welcomed and encouraged!

Currently, the unit is available to students enrolled in any 100 level unit offered by the Faculty of Human Sciences.  We can also post announcements to the students, so if you have an announcement to make to say all 100 level Linguistics students, we can do that! Contact me for access to post announcements or ask any member of the Student Administration team, they have the power!

If you are teaching 100 level units in 2017, please promote and direct your students to this unit.  You can either add the link to the unit in your iLearn unit [http://ilearn.mq.edu.au/course/view.php?id=26861] or email me [rebecca.ritchie@mq.edu.au] and I can add it for you.

Let’s get #FOHSMQ and #FOHSSGHS trending on MQ Twitter feed!

Thank you to everyone who has contributed!
