The Learning Innovation Hub was established in early 2016, after the Learning and Teaching Centre discontinued. The LIH brings to the community many different and diverse skills and resources.
A new learning analytics tool in iLearn is available for session 1. The Moodle Engagement Analytics Plugin (MEAP) tracks which students you deem at risk of falling behind. It allows you to create a customised profile of an “at-risk student” in your unit, send personalised, tailored emails to students that meet that profile. It can also provide you (and your HOD) with a record of what you have done to help your students.

What it is
Informit EduTV is an online TV streaming resource for Australian tertiary institutions providing content across a range of learning areas including Business, Economics, Health, History, Indigenous studies, Legal studies, Media studies, Performing arts, Politics, Government, Religious studies, Science, Technology, Society, Culture, Visual arts and design.
It logs free-to-air television , significant documentaries, and includes several programs broadcast on Pay TV channels such as The History Channel, National Geographic, NITV, BBC Knowledge and Discovery. Contents are accessible via computer, tablet or smartphone.
What it does
Informit EduTV makes it easy for lecturers and students to find and watch relevant television content instantly. The database contains over 30,000 programs including documentaries, drama and series. Content includes documentaries, drama, series and more from free-to-air and pay TV.
Archives of programs start from 2006 with up to 80 new programs added weekly
It can be searched by key subject areas, or new programmes, or alphabetical listing.
What you could do with it
You can save programmes to the my favourites folder. These can be filed in multiple folders, titled in a method which suits you.
You can make short clips to show in lectures, or for use to support your conference presentations. These clips can be saved in your my projects tab.
As an educational tool you are likely to find material to support your research or teaching, as well as your wider interests.
You will find Informit EduTV listed under the Library database holdings (choose the database tab in MultiSearch, and search from there). The library also offers other streaming video resources to support your learning and teaching.

There’s a myth I’d like to dispel, that using technology is hard and takes a lot of time. Technology and the use of digital tools can be easy to learn, adopt and implement in your teaching. Here’s where you can find some gold.
In late 2015 Professor Sherman Young launched the Learning and Teaching Strategic Framework, Learning for the Future. Point 1.3.1 of Learning for the Future calls for the creation of a “roadmap for the development of spaces and technologies”.
How do you know when students are really engaged? You scan their brain!
Bianca De Wit and David Kaplan will be sharing with the MQ community how they have used their research to create an active, completely engaging learning opportunity for students majoring in Cognitive and Brain Sciences. You will hear about how they have combined education, and neuroscience research to create an affordable, scalable and highly portable teaching lab. Students are immersed in hands-on, exploratory research activities which give them a live window into the workings of the human brain, seeing the concepts in action.
The Learning Innovation Hub advises that a tool within iLearn, Wimba Voice Board will be decommissioned by the end of this year and will no longer be available to use after 31 Dec 2016.
It will be replaced with another tool called VoiceThread which is now available for anyone wanting to use it.
VoiceThread allows you to set up an online asynchronous space for students to discuss and leave comments on presentations and images using annotations, text and audio. Students can also create and submit their own presentation, all through a link in iLearn. Neat!
VoiceThread has been trialed successfully so far is in languages at MQ, where students record spoken responses to a posted question/stimulus the language they are learning. The teacher can then also respond with a text or spoken comment with feedback.
It is also a tool that is suitable for the flipped classroom and can complement any active learning strategy.
