Engaging students in lectures with ALP (it’s more than live streaming)

You’ve heard about the live streaming pilot, right?  Active Learning Platform? Yeah, know all about it.  Well, I’m here to show you there’s so much more, road tested by your colleagues in the faculty!

Firstly, yes, you are right.  The Active Learning Platform does offer the capability of live streaming your lecture.  What it won’t do is create engagement.  You need to add those bits.  It’s not just about the technology, it’s rethinking how you structure and deliver a lecture.

Associate Professor Anina Rich

Associate Professor Anina Rich attended a workshop we ran in April on this very topic.  While initially hesitant (Anina’s research is focused on attention) but recognising that students are already on devices during lectures, why not try out the strategies and technology explored in the workshop?

Anina had two guest lecture spots on a first-year Cognitive Science unit.  Trying out the strategies of allowing time for students to pause and participate in a quick activity (such as a multiple choice question, images/hot spot and open-ended questions) gave students the ability to engage with the concepts of the lecture, as well as test their level understanding and receive immediate feedback.  It also allows for real-time discussion of any misperceptions, powerful to learning by responding at the point of confusion. [The platform also allows for students to flag if they are confused, plus other features.]

Anina was upfront with the students from the start of the lecture, that she was experimenting with a new technology and would be seeking their feedback, empowering the students.   The interactivity was also used to ask student feedback on their experience at the end of the first lecture, which Anina intended to gauge the effectiveness and whether she would use the tool in the next lecture.

– 94% found the interactive questioning useful
– the majority of the students preferred the multiple choice questions
