In this PACE Community of Practice Research Presentation, Dr Laura Hammersley will be presenting on her PhD research: “It’s about dignity not dependency”: Reciprocal relationships in undergraduate community-based service-learning.

Relationships forged through community engagement programs in the higher education context seek to provide a sustainable form of education that is reciprocal to both host communities and student groups. Despite the increased focus on civic participation in community development through higher education there is little attempt to conceptualise and critically deconstruct what reciprocity might mean or consideration of how it might be negotiated with partners or integrated into learning and assessment outcomes. Calls for greater critical engagement with the concept of reciprocity are embedded within a wider research agenda which appeals for more critical inquiry into the impacts and outcomes of community engagement programs on community counterparts. This presentation explores questions of reciprocity within Macquarie University’s Professional and Community Engagement (PACE) initiative. Specifically it examines reciprocal relationships between PACE and an Indigenous community-based organisation in Sabah, Malaysia. Findings will be presented from recently completed PhD research that examined community partner aspirations, motivations, impacts and outcomes related to PACE in light of their broader organisational objectives.
